Wie Dokkum binnen rijdt of vaart, wordt begroet door vier woontorens in pakhuisstijl. Ze staan als bakstenen sculpturen in de verlengde groene oevers, verwant aan elkaar, maar met elk hun eigen karakter. Met de ontwikkeling van de Houtkolk verrees de eerste hoogbouw van onze stad op de plek waar ooit een oud industrieterrein was. Niet alleen een uitdagende stap voor Dokkum, maar voor alle betrokken partijen.

Een project van
ons allemaal

Om de entree van Dokkum een gezicht te geven, is er nauwe samenwerking nodig. Het was de eerste hoogbouw van de stad. Naast de kerk en de watertoren, zou Houtkolk worden toegevoegd aan de bescheiden skyline van Dokkum. Een project waarvoor we zo’n vijf jaar nauw samenwerkten met de gemeente, bouwbedrijven en andere betrokkenen. Eén voor één sterk gemotiveerd om iets moois neer te zetten op deze zichtlocatie.

De stadsentree wilden we niet dichtzetten met bebouwing; die moet uitnodigen om het centrum te verkennen. De zichtlijnen vanaf de weg en het water waren daarom leidend in dit project. Vanuit welk perspectief je ook kijkt: er is altijd ruimte tussen de gebouwen. Zo krijgen bezoekers van Dokkum letterlijk een doorkijkje naar het historische centrum van de stad.

“Torens ontwerpen in een stad waar nog geen torens zijn: daar vinden mensen echt wel wat van. Dat leidt tot een bevlogen proces. Het was een uitdaging voor Dokkum die goed heeft uitgepakt.”

Geïnspireerd op de Hanzetijd

1726 — 1799

De Houtkolk is een van de oudste bedrijfsterreinen van Dokkum. Het was oorspronkelijk een molenlocatie aan de Dokkumer Ee. Al sinds de middeleeuwen vindt er langs de Dokkumer Ee bedrijvigheid plaats. In de periode 1726-1799 vaarden de Dokkumer schippers veel in het Sontgebied, onder andere naar grote Hanzesteden als Gdansk (Danzig), de inspiratie voor de naam van blok A.

Door de verschillende afmetingen, bezonning en de oriëntatie van de gebouwen, hebben alle appartementen hun eigen karakter. Toch zijn ze allen verbonden door hun industriële stijl en het gebruik van robuuste materialen.
